Web414 was the Web in Milwaukee. Before there was Web 2.0. Before HTML 5. Somewhere between the Cambridge Coffee Pot and The alt-universe election of Howard Dean, the web as we know it today took shape. These are the stories of the little meetup in Milwaukee that ultimately changed nothing, but helped shape everything. Working together, Web414 created yesterday’s web of tomorrow.
Meetup.com started charging in 2005. Web414 was born somewhere around there. We started meeting in classrooms and secret locations in and around MSOE. And then Bucketworks. Then at C2. And there were Devhouses, and BarCamps, and many other things. We did a monthly talk show for a while. We wrote a manifesto. We had pizza and sad cakes. And then we went on with our lives and were fabulous.
This is not a nostalgia podcast. This is a podcast wherein we talk about the throughline from Web414 to today. What stayed the same, why is it important, and how has it shaped who you are today? We explore the past to help us better understand today.
Are you game?
